Children & Young People

Here at Out There, we recognise the impact that the imprisonment of a family member or close loved one has on Children and Young People as well as the adult family members.

We receive referrals from parents, schools, children’s social care and health professionals who encounter children and young people who are experiencing various emotional difficulties due to familial imprisonment.

We work with the child’s parent or carer and schools to create a family led approach to support children and young people who may need some extra support to process and manage difficult feelings and emotions.

The Child Impact Assessment is a tool created by the Prison Reform Trust that we use to capture the voice of the CYP and guide them towards a pathway of support that they create and lead.

Children and Young People Support is provided in several different ways: –

Communication

Support to help parents find the right words to use when explaining to children and young people where their loved one is, and why in a sensitive and age-appropriate way.

Prison Visits

We have a child friendly booklet that we or you can work through prior to or after the prison visit. We are also happy to discuss accompanying you and your child on your first visit.

Direct Work

For school age children and young people, delivered by Out There CYP team of practitioners and volunteers. Direct work usually takes place in school and is a bespoke one to one programme tailored to the CYP circumstances and needs. Each session provides a safe space with a trusted adult who will help the young person set goals and aspirations, teach strategies to manage strong emotions and provide a positive role model who will listen and advise.

Family Activities / Peer Support

We provide school holiday activity days in the community or at our hub in Old Trafford. These sessions help provide a social space to meet others, reduce isolation and give opportunities for children and their families to experience something new e.g. beach days, zoo trips, museums, art sessions, cooking and much more.

Signposting
